Aphrodite Les Folies

Manchester Evening News Arena

On Saturday 2nd April, 2011, I went to the Manchester Evening News Arena to see Kylie in her new stage spectacular, "Aphrodite - Les Folies" tour.  I was seated to the right of the stage, on the second to back row in the lower section which explains why my photos aren't as good as I would have liked them to have been.  I think they do give an idea of what the show was like though.   I have also added an extra page of photos courtesy of a friend who went to one of the London shows and also some of the programmes photos.  This can be accessed by clicking on this link. Les Folies Extra.

The show was opened by a group of 4 girls called Ultragirls. They performed a really good 4 song set before leaving the stage and leaving us all waiting for the star of the show.  Kylie appeared at 8-50 and performed 25 songs in a two hour show, without any breaks.  She arrived by coming down in a large golden chair, and she was wearing angel wings and knee length gold boots!   As can be seen from the middle photo below, the stage was a strange shape, spreading out into the middle of the Arena.  The triangular bit in the middle was the splash zone, more of which a little later!

Kylie started the show by singing the title track of the latest album, "Aphrodite". She went on to perform 10 of the 12 tracks from the album.  The two that she didn't perform were ""Too Much" and "Can't Beat The Feeling."  The circular bit of the main stage was a giant cd.  This lifted up at an angle which was put to excellent use during a new version of "Slow".

During this show, Kylie performed a couple of surprises.  The first one was a cover of the Eurythmics "There Must Be An Angel (Playing With My Heart)" which caused one the biggest applauses of the night. The other surprise was another cover version, but this time of a song that Kylie herself recorded as a b-side to the cd single of "Confide In Me".  This was "If You Don't Love Me", which has always been a favourite track of mine but one I never expected to hear her sing live.  She sang this on an empty stage, just seated at the top of the staircase. The middle photo below shows her getting towards the position to sing this song.  Beautiful version of a beautiful song.

The photo in the middle of the three above shows Kylie riding on the back of an angel.  It was from this position that she sang "Looking For An Angel" which was one of my highlights of the show.  I mentioned earlier the splash zone.  This was a special area that fans could pay to stand in which got them closer to the show but could also get them very wet!!  The encore consisted of a medley of "On A Night Like This" and "All The Lovers" which was a beautiful way to end the show.  During these songs, the circular stage at the end of the walkway became a circular pool of water and showers of water shot out of the walkways, stopping to let Kyle walk past and then starting again once she'd passed.  She left the stage at 10-55 pm having performed for slightly over two hours.  This was the fifth time I've seen Kylie in concert now, and as I said after the last concert I went too, she gets better every time.
